The technology works by scanning media and placing an "invisible watermark" on its metadata. This invisible watermark is then recorded on the Aptos blockchain, providing an immutable record of ownership.
A spokesperson for the project explained that ownership is retained no matter how many times the media is compressed, screenshotted or converted, and that ownership remains the same no matter where the media is posted online or elsewhere.
Luke Neumann, co-founder and CEO of Overlai, said the company's goal is to become a one-stop store for copyright and other intellectual property protection in the digital age: "We want this platform to set a new standard for ingredient tracking, royalty payments, and provenance. The core focus of Overlai's mission is to protect artists and creatives from AI crawling, the process by which AI programs and algorithms search the Internet and use media to train AI.
